Google has recently announced Ph.D. Fellowship programs for international students for the academic year 2020-2021. Google Ph.D. Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their Ph.D., as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising Ph.D. candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to apply. We currently offer Fellowships in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, India, the United States and Canada.

What disciplines are offered by Google Fellowship Program?

Google Ph.D. Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

  • Algorithms, Optimizations and Markets
  • Computational Neuroscience
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Machine Learning
  • Machine Perception, Speech Technology and Computer Vision
  • Mobile Computing
  • Natural Language Processing (including Information Retrieval and Extraction)
  • Privacy and Security
  • Programming Languages and Software Engineering
  • Quantum Computing
  • Structured Data and Database Management
  • Systems and Networking

How to apply for the Google Fellowship program?

Google fellowship application guide for North America and Europe

In the United States, Canada, and Europe, accredited Ph.D. granting institutions in Computer Science or related fields may nominate eligible students during the application period.

The Google North America and Europe Ph.D. Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Applications for the 2021 program will open on November 1st, 2020 and will close on November 30, 2020, at 11:59:59 PM PST. Awardees will be notified by March 2021.

Google fellowship application guide for Australia, China and East Asia

In Australia, China and East Asia students must be nominated by an eligible university. Nomination instructions are sent to eligible universities and submissions must be provided directly by an official representative of the university. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Invitations for the 2019 Ph.D. Fellowship Program in China/Hong Kong/Japan/South Korea will be delivered in April 2019. And the application window will be closed at 11:59:59 PM CST May 31, 2019.

Invitations for the 2019 Ph.D. Fellowship Program in Australia will be delivered in March 2019 and awardees will be notified by June 2019.

Google fellowship application guide for Africa and India

In India and Africa, students may apply directly during the application period, which opens each February in India and each January in Africa.

The Google India Ph.D. Fellowship program application window for 2019 is closed as of 11:59:59 PM IST on Friday, April 19, 2019. Awardees will be notified via email by August 2019.

The Google Africa Ph.D. Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Applications for the 2020 program will open in January 2020.
