It is a country with a highly regarded higher educational system. The universities here do not charge tuition fees from locals and students from the European Union. The capital, Bratislava hosts a number of good universities. These universities have excellent extra-curricular activities as well and the student life is considered to be pretty ‘cool’.
Let’s learn some more about the Slovakian higher educational system and the scholarships available there.
The language of instruction in Slovakia is primarily Slovak and English. Some other minority languages of instruction are Hungarian, Ukrainian, and German. International, as well as local students taking up courses in English, have to prove their language proficiency via IELTS, TOEFL, etc. if their first language is not English.
Living in Slovakia is considered to be cheap among ex-pats and international students. One can live off easily with around 1,100 EUR a month. Paying rent in the capital, Bratislava can be very expensive though. Eating out and the internet are cheap while the prices of utilities are high.
Slovakia, like many other European countries, is very flexible in allowing international students to work. Students can work for a maximum of 20 hours a week. Students are also welcomed to apply for jobs in Slovakia. If they get one, they can stay in Slovakia without applying for a special work visa.
Of all the universities in Slovakia, 32 have been listed in different types of university rankings. Still, some institutions are better than others and have high credibility in the professional world. These are Comenius University in Bratislava, Pavol Jozef Safárik University in Kosice, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, and The Technical University of Kosice (TUKE).
Most of the universities in Slovakia are state-owned. There is no tuition fee for Slovakians and students from the EU. International students from outside of the EU have to pay from 2,500 USD to 6,500 USD a year.
There are no university-sponsored scholarships in Slovakia, but, the government of Slovakia has announced a pretty generous scholarship program that is exclusively for international students.
