The University of Canterbury Scholarship for international students is now open for undergraduate programs. It is one of the best chances for international students to take advantage of studying in New Zealand this year.

This University of Canterbury scholarship recognizes top international scholars and supports them in study towards an undergraduate Engineering degree at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Thirty-five scholarships are available annually. The online application system will begin accepting applications eight weeks before the closing date.

Eligibility criteria

    • Applicants cannot be:
      a. citizens of New Zealand or Australia; or
      b. Permanent Residents of Australia; or
      c. holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
    • By the closing date for their application (see section 3), an applicant must have applied to the University for admission to a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) degree.
    • Applicants cannot be already enrolled in a programme for a BE(Hons) degree at the University.

Benefits of UC Scholarship

    • The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value of $15,000.
    • The scholarship is paid to a recipient’s University tuition fees account as soon as practicable after confirmation of enrolment as specified in clause 8.2.

Application process

Applications must be made online at the Scholarships website3 by:

    • 15 August (for those who are studying in New Zealand at that date); or
    • 31 October (for those who are studying overseas at that date); or

Selection process

    • Thirty-five scholarships are available annually.
    • The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:
      a. the Vice-Chancellor (or nominee); and
      b. the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Engineering (or nominee).

Selection criteria

    • In making its recommendation, the committee considers, in descending order of priority: a. academic achievement;
      b. demonstrated commitment to, and interest in, Engineering;
      c. cultural and/or sporting participation, and/or community service; and
      d. general character.
    • If, in any year, there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than there are scholarships available, fewer awards are made.

How to apply for this University of Canterbury Scholarship?

You may apply through this webpage approximately 8 weeks before applications close. If it’s possible to apply on-line for this scholarship there will be a link above to the on-line system. If the link is not provided, please download and complete the application form located below.

However, if the scholarship is managed by Universities NZ or another department of the University an External Website link will appear below and application instructions will be available through that link.

By the closing date for his or her application, an applicant must have applied to the University of Canterbury for admission to the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) degree programme.

Applicants cannot already be enrolled in a BE(Hons) programme at the University of Canterbury.

Deadline of Scholarship:

  • 15 August (for those who are studying in New Zealand at that date)
  • October (for those who are studying overseas at that date)
  • 1 March (for those who will be first enrolling for the following Semester 2 or for Summer School)
