English Langauge Requirements of University of Melbourne
The medium of instruction for all degree majors is the English language at the University of Melbourne. Therefore, the admissions department of Melbourne University also checks the English language abilities of applicants by English language proficiency test standards.
IELTS Requirement at the University of Melbourne: Optional
IELTS is an optional admission application requirement at the University of Melbourne; if applicants hold Pearson PTE Academic tests, TOEFL, or TOEFL iBT (Temporarily accepted). DET, or other English language tests are not accepted at the moment at University of Melbourne.

Stipend and fee offset scholarships
- 100% fee remission and up to $110,000
- Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters’s by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
- Living allowance of $31,200 per year pro-rata (2020 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a master’s by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick maternity and parenting leave.
- Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.

Detailed Funding Coverage of University of Melbourne Scholarships
Benefits vary between scholarships offered at the University of Melbourne. The benefits that apply to your Scholarship are specified in your scholarship offer and may include one or more of the benefits defined in this clause.
A: Stipend (Living allowance)
- The yearly stipend rate for full-time students is stated in your scholarship offer.
- The yearly stipend rate for part-time students is 50 percent of the full-time student rate
- Stipends are paid fortnightly from the commencement date of the Scholarship.
B: Fee offset
- A fee offset is a fee remission or exemption that covers the course tuition fees for the maximum duration of the Scholarship. Students who remain enrolled beyond the end date of their scholarship may become liable for paying the remaining tuition fees.
C: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- Unless otherwise specified in your scholarship offer, the University will provide visa length OSHC Single membership for students who require a Student Visa to study in Australia.
- The University will either:
- arrange OSHC on your behalf with the University’s preferred OSHC provider after you have accepted your course and scholarship offer, or
- reimburse the cost upon provision of a receipt if you have arranged your own OSHC membership up to the scheduled value used by the University’s preferred OSHC provider.
D: Relocation allowance
- The University will pay a relocation allowance to students who:
- were living overseas or interstate at the time of applying for the scholarship,
- have not studied at an institution in Victoria within 12 months prior to applying for the scholarship, and
- had to relocate to Melbourne to commence their course of study at the University of Melbourne
- The allowance is usually included in the first payment of the stipend. The value of the allowance is:
- A$2,000 for a student who has relocated from interstate, or
- A$3,000 for students who have relocated from outside Australia
- The University will pay a relocation allowance to students who:
E: Thesis Allowance
- If you must lodge a hard copy of your thesis as a course completion requirement, the University will reimburse the cost related to the production of a thesis (e.g. printing, binding) upon presentation of receipts.
- Requests for reimbursement must be made within 6 months of the date of purchase.
- The maximum value of this allowance is:
- A$420 for a Master degree thesis
- A$840 for a Doctoral degree thesis
Steps to Apply for the University of Melbourne Scholarships:
When you apply for graduate research degrees at the University of Melbourne, you need to choose a research area, check you meet entry requirements, then apply directly to the University of Melbourne. If eligible, you’ll automatically be considered for a Graduate Research Scholarship. You may also be eligible for other scholarships and bursaries at the University of Melbourne, which require an application.
To help you do this, follow our step-by-step guide below on how to apply for graduate research degrees.
Step 1. Choose a degree
Choose the graduate research degree you want to apply for. Options include:
- Doctor of Philosophy – Up to 4 years in duration, you will undertake original research on a specialized topic and produce a thesis of approximately 80 000 words. Some of our PhDs include teaching subjects in the first year.
- Doctorate by Research – offering a coursework component in parallel with meetings with your research, giving high-level engagement with the key literature in your research area.
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil) – an internationally recognized master’s degree by research that requires the completion of a thesis of 30 000–40 000 words.
- Masters by Research – different from the MPhil it offers a coursework component, along with a shorter thesis of about 30 000 words.
Step 2. Check Eligibility and Fees
You need to meet the minimum eligibility to apply for graduate research degrees. This includes degree requirements, English language requirements, and meeting student visa conditions set by the Department of Home Affairs.
If you want to study for less than an academic year, you’ll need to apply as an exchange or study abroad student through a separate application.

Step 3: Prepare Admission Application Documentation Set
At a minimum, you will need to provide academic transcripts and a CV with your application. If you’re currently studying, you’ll also need to provide a transcript of your final results and evidence of completion as soon as they’re available.
If you don’t have verified digital copies of academic documents for prior or current studies and wish to obtain them during your application, you can select Digital VIA when requested during your submission. This includes English-translated documents and can be fulfilled for both interim qualifications and completed qualifications.
Obtaining verified digital copies of academic documents can help fast-track your application and retain it for use with other applications you wish to make. The Digital VIA option includes a one-off charge.
Depending on the course, you may also have to provide a research proposal, folio of creative works, GRE or GMAT test result, or writing sample.
3.1 Academic transcripts
If you’re currently studying, you’ll also need to provide a transcript of your final results and evidence of completion as soon as they’re available. Some graduate schools will consider applications at any time, others only assess applications at fixed times of the year.

Check the graduate degree you’re applying for to find out the application due dates before submitting your application.
You will also need to provide the name and contact details of the two referees. If it is less than 5 years since you completed your last degree, they should be academic referees. If it is more than 5 years since you completed your last degree, they may be professional referees. Once you submit your application, your referees will be emailed a link to provide their references online.
In the event your referee does not receive the email with the link, they may download the appropriate PDF form below and return it to the email address on the form. Please note that the online form is the preferred method for references to be provided, as it links the reference directly to your application.
It is important that you contact your referees well before submitting an application. This ensures they expect the request for a reference. Some graduate schools will consider applications at any time, others assess applications at fixed times of the year only.
3.3 Agreement for a Joint Ph.D. Degree
Your Joint Ph.D. enrolment and candidature will be governed by an agreement between us and your partner institution. This Graduate Researcher Agreement will outline your location periods (of at least 12 months) at each institution, thesis requirements, as well as supervision, funding, examination, and graduation arrangements.
This agreement should be obtained from the coordinator of the Joint Ph.D. activity. Coordinator contact details can be found on the websites of the Joint Ph.D. activity you are applying for. The agreement should be completed within your first year of study.
If you want to include in your application details of publications of which you are the author or co-author, please follow the following formatting conventions. Relevant publications include refereed journal articles, refereed conference papers, book chapters, or books that have been published or are forthcoming. Please present publications in the format below: Begin with the most recent publication first:
- Journal articles: author(s), the title of the article, journal title and issue/number, year of publication, page references;
- Book chapters: author(s), chapter title, book editors, the title of the book, page references, place of publication, publisher, and year of publication;
- Books: author(s), book title, place of publication, publisher, and year of publication;
- Refereed conference papers: author(s), paper title, the title of the conference, and date(s) of the conference.
Do not include articles or other works which have not yet been accepted for publication.
Step 4: Apply for Admissions at the University of Melbourne
Early application is recommended for graduate research degrees, as you may be given an early offer by some schools. Late applications may also be accepted if places are available.
- If you’re a current student at Melbourne, apply through your student account
- If you’re a new student, you can apply online. You’ll need to provide a copy of your academic results as part of your application.
- If you need help applying, you can find an overseas representative to help you lodge an application, accept your offer and apply for a student visa (if admitted into the University).
Ensure you apply by the relevant deadline. Check the graduate degree you’re applying for to find out the application due dates before submitting your application.
You can track your application by logging back into your student account, or the online account where you applied, and viewing the status of your application.
Step 5. Be Assessed and Wait for Admission Offer
After you submit your application for admission/scholarship to the University of Melbourne, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your unique student ID and application reference number. If anything is missing from your application, we’ll email you.
Assessment of your application will take approximately 8-12 weeks for most graduate research degrees, however, some graduate schools assess applications in rounds on particular dates. If you are selected for admission, we’ll email you directly with an offer.
If the offer is conditional, you need to meet the offer conditions before accepting it. If you’ve been sent an unconditional offer, you can choose to accept it immediately.
Step 6: Search for an Australian Scholarship

If eligible, you will automatically be considered for a Graduate Research Scholarship. Other scholarships are available by application. These include:
- Endeavor Scholarships – competitive, merit-based scholarships and fellowships offered by the Australian government, providing opportunities for Australians to undertake study, research, or professional development overseas and for overseas citizens to do the same in Australia.
- Traveling scholarships – for students undertaking research at an overseas institution, such as the Rae and Edith Bennett Travelling Scholarship.
- Other grants and bursaries – some offered by faculties to reward you for academic achievement and to help with the general cost of living and tuition while studying at Melbourne.
