Students from most of the African countries are usually not privileged enough to pursue higher education abroad or even in their home countries due to financial stumbling blocks. For that reason, there are a number of scholarships available that are exclusive to African students. These African only scholarships are funded by a number of sources like the universities themselves, governments, private donors, corporations, commonwealth, etc.

#! National Health Research Awards in Zambia:

Targeted toward Zambian students, these scholarships by the National Health Research Authority are for conducting research in any health-related discipline. The applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree or any other equivalent qualification to be able to apply for the award. The recipients will get coverage for all of their educational expenses.

#2 Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Scholarships:

The scholarships are awarded at the postgraduate levels to conduct research regarding converting waste matter into energy. The award can be taken up at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The applications are open for students from all nationalities including the whole of Africa. The value of the award is a full tuition fee waiver. The scholarship is available to study MPhil in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, and Biosystems engineering.

#3 African Gifted Foundation Scholarships:

Sponsored by the African Gifted Foundation, these grants are available to take up at African Science Academy in Ghana. The awards are given at the undergraduate level and the targeted students are African students. The institution offers a vast array of undergraduate and short courses that have profound international value. The value of the awards is 5,000 GBP which will be enough to cover the recipients’ tuition and accommodation charges.

#4 American University in Cairo Fellowships:

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) is offering fellowships at the master’s level. Within the fellowship, the recipients will be able to work under a faculty member and will conduct first-hand research in their chosen area of study. The fellowship provides a tuition fee waiver for up to three credits in a semester. The students can also get funding for taking English language courses and/or any other remedial course that they may be taking up. The applications are open for both Egyptian and international students.

#5 Mediterranean School of Business Scholarships in Tunisia:

The Diversity Scholarships offered by the Mediterranean School of Business give a tuition fee waiver of up to 30%. The awards are given on the under and postgraduate levels and the students from emerging or developing countries (including and especially African countries) will be given preference. The applicants should have fantastic academic records and should possess an active résumé/curriculum. The MBA program offered by the university is high in demand.

#6 Makerere University (Uganda) Ph.D. fellowships:

The Makerere University of Uganda has two open positions for pursuing a Ph.D. in the field of Certifications of Citizenship in Africa (CITIZENS) research program. Available at the department of development studies, this award is open for international students including students from other parts of Africa. The Ph.D. is fully funded i.e. all the educational expenses of the students will be covered including the living expenses, healthcare, research costs, and the cost of traveling for purposes of attending conferences and conducting fieldwork.

The total value of the fellowship per student is a maximum of 4,015,000 UGX which is equivalent to eleven thousand USD a year. Each recipient will also be entitled to a laptop computer.

#7 University of Ghana Fellowship:

UG-Tullow Tertiary Scholarship Scheme at the University of Ghana is open at the undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels. The scholarship is fully funded and covers tuition costs, healthcare, and accommodation for students. It also offers a monthly stipend to cover the living expenses and a small amount for buying a laptop. The tenure of the scholarship is four years for a bachelor’s program and one year for the postgraduate master’s program. The applicants must be citizens of Ghana and must be financially in need of the scholarship.

#8 Kakamega (Kenya) County programs

The County Government of Kakamega is offering support to those students who want to undertake bachelor’s studies in Kenya. The award is open for Kenyan students and the subject areas affiliated with it are medicine, agriculture, engineering, and ICT. The county program is meant to provide funding to students who are not financially sound enough to pursue higher education.

#9 Taita Taveta University, Kenya Scholarships:

The CEMEREM scholarship scheme at the Taita Taveta University of Kenya is giving out partial and full study funding to deserving master’s candidates. The programs approved are MSc in environmental or process engineering, natural resource management, or mining engineering. The students can be from Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Burundi, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
